Mike Oliver addresses the concerns of Montgomery County residents.
Questions & Answers
Q: The jail has experienced significant turnover. What are your plans to improve retention?
A: One major issue is a lack of recognition and incentive. From making sure the right people are promoted to implementing employee-of-the-month recognition and improving leadership training—we must rethink how we value and support our deputies. Good patrol deputies start at the jail. It’s time we invested in our people.
Q: What role do School Resource Officers (SROs) play, and how do you see their future?
A: SROs are essential to school safety and community trust. They’re more than security; they’re educators, mentors, and a critical line of defense. While metal detectors are ideal in theory, staffing is too low to support that realistically. Before we expand programs, we must address retention and hiring challenges first.
Q: How will you improve morale within the Sheriff’s Office?
A: It starts with leadership that listens. Deputies want to feel respected and heard. I plan to rebuild trust by working alongside my team, encouraging feedback, and making sure policies work for the people who carry them out.
Q: What is your stance on community relations and public trust?
A: Public trust is earned by being transparent and accountable. We need to be out in the community, not just when something goes wrong, but every day. I believe in showing up, answering hard questions, and building relationships that last beyond election cycles.
Q: What makes you the most qualified candidate for Sheriff?
A: I’ve served in nearly every division of the Sheriff’s Office over 32 years. From corrections to patrol, K-9, drug task force, and SVU, I bring experience from the ground up. I know the challenges, and I know what real solutions look like. Most importantly, I know the people I serve.
